Locksmith Guide: Hire Safely, Rekey Smart, Lock Better

Plain-language answers to the questions people ask before, during and after calling a locksmith in Los Angeles.

How to hire a legitimate locksmith

Run through this checklist before you let anyone work on your door.

  • Ask for the business name and make sure the phone is answered with it.
  • Ask for the license number. California locksmith companies are licensed through the state. Verify the number with the licensing agency.
  • Get the price first, ideally in writing, including the service call and labor.
  • Check ID and vehicle when the locksmith arrives.
  • Expect to prove you live there. Legitimate locksmiths verify before opening a door.
  • Bait-and-switch pricing
A very low phone quote that rises on arrival.
  • Unmarked car, no ID
Cannot show a license or company details.
  • Insists on drilling
Most lockouts do not need it.
  • Cash only, pressure to decide
Refuses to put the price in writing.

Rekey or replace?

The right choice depends on the condition of your locks and what you want to change.

Understanding lock grades

ANSI/BHMA grades rate durability and security: Grade 1 is the highest, Grade 2 mid-range and Grade 3 basic. For exterior doors, Grade 1 or Grade 2 deadbolts are a common recommendation. Good hardware also needs a solid strike plate and long screws into the door frame.

Smart lock checklist

Check that it fits your door, how it is powered, whether it has a physical key backup, how codes are managed and whether it works with your home setup. Professional installation helps keep the lock aligned and working smoothly.

If you are locked out

Check other entrances and spare keys, contact your property manager, then call a locksmith. Do not force the door or window, which can cost more to repair than the lockout itself.

After a move or breakup

Rekey or replace locks, collect or invalidate old keys, and update codes on keypads and smart locks. It is a small cost for peace of mind.

Quick answers

What are lock grades?

ANSI/BHMA grades rate lock durability and security. Grade 1 is the highest, Grade 2 is mid-range and Grade 3 is basic residential. Grade 1 or 2 deadbolts are a common recommendation for exterior doors.

Is a smart lock more secure than a regular lock?

Not automatically. Security depends on the lock quality, installation and how you manage codes. Smart locks add convenience and the ability to change access without new keys.

Can a locksmith get into my home without damaging the door?

Usually yes. Professionals try non-destructive methods first and only drill or replace hardware when needed.
